Should You Adopt a Puppy or an Adult Dog?

If you are planning to welcome a furry friend into your life, it’s not always a matter of ‘I want a dog, so I’m going to adopt one’. It is rather a long process where you have to consider various factors and it’s not always an easy decision. Dogs are part of a family. It needs care and affection like babies. So considering all that, let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of adopting dogs of various ages.

Adopting a puppy!

Puppies are cute and harmless. Many a time, most of us want to adopt puppies but like babies, puppies are laborious to manage. They are naïve and needs more training to behave in a certain way. They need a lot of exercise, proper food so that they can grow properly and you have to make them socialize with people and other animals so that they can survive in this world. As they grow like babies they tend to chew, make a mess, and get in trouble. So, if you are planning to adopt a puppy, you have to think about the amount of work that will go into raising them. It requires ample of your time, dedication, and attention.

The health of a puppy

Adopting a puppy from shelters and homes without any medical history of the mama dog can lead to unpredictable situations. Because most of the rescue puppies are taken from their mothers at a very young age and medical care is provided only when they enter the shelters.

Most of the puppies don’t show any form of illness until they move into their new homes. So, while adopting a puppy you must be ready to face any challenges and provide proper care and medical help if the puppy needs any. Also, the size and shape of mixed breed dogs from the shelter cannot be determined by looking at a small pup. So make sure, you are ready to make your home a happy place for the puppy after he/she becomes an adult as well.

Adopting an adult dog!

While puppies are cute and innoxious, adopting an adult dog has its own advantage. For those who are looking for a companion and don’t have enough time in hand to raise a pup, adopting an adult dog would be an ideal choice. The adult dogs are emotionally more mature and don’t need any extra training.

Adult dogs know how to move around and can communicate with you if they want to pee or eat. Since they are fully grown, you have an idea of what you are getting yourself into when you adopt them. Even if the rescues don’t show their personalities fully when you first adopt them since you can see their physical trait you will have a basic understanding of their temperament.

Unconditional love

One of the most common questions that arise when adopting an adult dog is about their bonding with the family. If you are concerned that an adult dog won’t bond with you, don’t worry. It may take some time for them to move on from their past but working with them and showing them that you can be trusted will help them overcome any emotional hurdles. Since they are very resilient and open-hearted once they trust you then you have yourself a long-time best friend.

Bringing a dog into your life is just half the story, as a Pet Parent, you should always ensure your fur kids have a happy and a safe environment no matter you are with them or away.
